IV: Eric C., Kyle D. stand tall

Neither attempted to complete our special four-point bonus puzzle, but that didn't prevent them from sharing the title in a thrilling finish.

Co-champions Kyle D. (left) and Eric C. survey the aftermath after a dazzling conclusion to POPS PROPS IV.

Of our 69 entrants in POPS PROPS IV, 37 (53.62 percent) of them correctly picked the Seattle Seahawks to win Super Bowl XLVIII. But who predicted that the game would be out of hand just seconds into the second-half? Not many of the bold competitors in POPS PROPS IV!

Eric C. and Kyle D. tied for the championship with 38 points and just five points separated the top 19 finishers! The Eric/Kyle triumph was particularly striking, when you consider that neither of this year’s co-champions even submitted answers to the Bonus Logic Puzzle (with 4 possible points). Both Eric and Kyle picked Seattle to win, but had one of them taken the time to fill out the puzzle, they could be standing alone as champion!

Kevin K, eldest son of POPS FRESHNEMEYER, tied Uncle Tony and Tony S. for third place with 36 points. Kevin submitted a logic puzzle but picked Denver to win and earned 0 of 4 possible bonus points. Meanwhile, Uncle Tony earned two points in the logic puzzle for correctly picking the Seahawks to win, but predicted that Wes Welker would earn the first positive yardage in the first half and Marshawn Lynch would earn the first positive yardage in the second half. As it turns out, Welker gained the first positive yardage in the SECOND HALF and Lynch gained the first positive yardage in the FIRST HALF — and Uncle Tony was denied two bonus points. Tony S., like Eric and Kyle, failed to complete a bonus puzzle but picked the Seahawks to win.

A FEW OBSERVATIONS

* For the first time in POPS PROPS history, a quarterback was not selected as the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. Six of our 69 entrants guessed the name of a Seahawk defender, but no one guessed Malcolm Smith. (No, not that Malcolm Smith.) Henceforth, no bonus points were awarded for this question. (30 of our entrants guessed Peyton Manning.)

* Of our top 10 finishers, five picked the Seahawks to win and five picked the Broncos to win.

* 44 of our entrants (64 percent) thought Renee Fleming’s National Anthem would last longer than 2 minutes, 10 seconds. She finished in 2 minutes, 2 seconds.. Meanwhile, only 12 entrants (17 percent) correctly guessed that Fleming would be wearing no gloves at all! Most of our field thought her gloves would be either black (35 percent) or white (21 percent)!

* The kickoff-temperature question (#6) was sort of a dud. It was 49 degrees at kickoff, so the temperature was never an issue. 39 entrants (57 percent) correctly predicted that the temp would be more than 33.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

* It took them long enough, but Joe Buck and Troy Aikman finally cut to Erin Andrews before Pam Oliver. Congratulations to the 38 entrants (55 percent) who got that right for question #8.

* Most of our field thought the Broncos would come out strong and score quickly. 48 entrants (70 percent) incorrectly predicted that they would cross the 50-yard-line first (question #11), 44 entrants (64 percent) erred in thinking that the Broncos would score first (question #12) and 45 contestants (65 percent) were wrong in their belief that Denver would lead at the end of the first quarter (question #18)!

* No one guessed that the first score would be a safety (question #13)!

* The first commercial after the conclusion of the first quarter (question #19) was that terrible Chevy commercial that was somehow also about cancer. 16 entrants (23 percent) correctly predicted that the commercial would be about automobiles. The majority (19 entrants) thought it would be about alcohol!

* Sixteen entrants (23 percent) correctly guessed that Bruno Mars’ first song would be none of the seven possibilities we listed! He opened with part of “Billionaire,” which I guess is an early song of his or something. Just 11 entrants (16 percent) correctly guessed that he would not be wearing a hat!

* Congratulations to the 14 entrants (20 percent) who correctly predicted that two of the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be shirtless (question #24)!

* A whopping 87 percent (60 entrants) of the field correctly guessed that more points would be scored in the second half than the first half! But 75 percent of our field thought the final score would be in the last 3 ½ minutes – it occurred with just over 11 minutes to play!

* One of the closet questions in POPS PROPS IV was whether the total number of touchdowns would be over 5 ½ (question #42). 51 percent correctly said YES!

* Percy Harvin gained the most (137) all-purpose yards (receiving + return + rushing) in the game, and thus 14 entrants (20 percent) got question #46 right when they guessed “Someone else!” Harvin also gained the most rushing yards (45) in the game (question #53), but only 3 entrants (4 percent) correctly guessed “Someone else!” for that one. Finally, despite Harvin’s big night, he gained just 5 receiving yards. So the 38 entrants (55 percent) who guessed the under for question #56 got a well-earned point.

* Most of the field (52 percent) thought there would be under 50 ½ points scored in the game. In fact, there were 51 points scored!
